Plate 58 of The Birds of America by John Audubon, the Hermit Thrush. The birds themselves are hardly what could be called a tour de force, but how could they be? They’re little brown birds and we’ve all seen little brown birds, but Audubon paintings are always special, so take a moment to appreciate the sublime composition of the branches they’re sitting on.
